Laser Spider Vein Removal

Spider veins or “starbursts” are those small yet unsightly clusters of red, blue or purple veins that most commonly appear on the thighs, calves and ankles, but may also appear on the face. Dr. Dyer Goode treats spider veins with laser therapy in order to treat the bothersome symptoms associated with spider veins including: aching, burning, swelling and night cramps.

Although their exact cause is unknown, it is known that spider veins are related to abnormal blood flow in the affected veins. Gaining weight, sitting, or standing for long periods of time or sustaining injuries in affected areas can contribute to the development of spider veins. In women, spider veins can develop during pregnancy. Spider veins on the face are caused by extreme exposure to the sun.

What are some of the most common benefits of the treatment?
Dr. Dyer Goode uses laser treatments to selectively target and destroy the red coloration of the spider veins without damaging the surrounding tissue. After treatment, the skin can be noticeably more uniform and natural in appearance.

How is Laser Spider Vein Removal performed?

Emissions of light from the laser will be used to remove the superficial blood vessels at precisely controlled levels of penetration.
You may undergo an initial calibration session. Several settings of the laser will be tested on very small portions of the skin to judge the finest setting for your personalized case. In this scenario, you will return a few days later to determine which setting worked best and the optimal setting will then be used during your session.

As the laser works, you may hear it zapping, and smell smoke. Afterward, the treated area will be covered with an antibiotic ointment to eliminate any surface bacteria.

You may feel a slight burning or stinging sensation as well as hear a zapping or smell smoke as the laser penetrates your skin. However, pain is minimal and no anesthesia is required. An antibiotic ointment is applied to the surface of the treated area to eliminate bacteria.

How long does the procedure take?
The amount of time varies from depending on the size of the area being treated, as well as the severity of the problem. Usually, several treatments’ that may last as long as an hour are needed to achieve the desired results.

What can I expect after the procedure?
You may experience some redness and swelling of the treated area, which is common and will disappear after a few days. Ice packs are recommended to reduce swelling.

Recovery times depend on the extent of the treatment and the individual’s capacity to heal. Some redness or purple discoloration may persist for several weeks, or longer. The redness will gradually lighten to a pink tone, and then to a lighter, more natural color. This process usually takes 5-10 days.

It is important to remember that laser removal does not deter the normal effects of aging and that treatment does not prevent the occurrence of new spider veins, however, most patients are satisfied with the results. After treatment, the unsightly spider veins are significantly reduced and the skin is returned to its more natural state.
